2010 Rural State Championships

Brigade Secretary,

Several weeks ago, a letter was sent to brigade’s advising them that the 2010 Rural State Championships would be held in Werribee. The letter asked for brigade members who may be interested in assisting the organizing committee to attend a meeting that was to be held in June. Due to circumstances beyond our control, the venue originally selected has since become unavailable and the meeting was postponed.

The Championships will now be held at the Whittlesea Showgrounds on 27th & 28th March. This venue provides the host committee with the opportunity to showcase the skills of CFA volunteers to the local and surrounding communities affected by the Black Saturday fires. The host committee is working with local, state and federal governments to look at ways to put on a special event for both firefighters and the community.

The host committee is now looking for members of brigades to join them and assist in organizing this event. No experience in rural competitions is necessary, only the ability to work within a team.

The next meeting will be held at Yarrambat Fire Station at 0900 hours on Sunday 16th August. Any enquiries can be made to committee Chairman Darren McQuade on 0409 393 773.

Regards

Jenny Broadhurst

Secretary

Operational Debriefs - February Bushfires

I was asked some time ago to post our Brigade's debriefs. These were submitted to the Group, which would then be rolled up to the Regional debrief.

The raw file is the notes straight from the whiteboard. The other file is the raw notes massaged into the format required by CFA.
Apologies for not posting these sooner.

Grants night reminder

Hi all,

Just a reminder about the grants night to be held at the Mernda Football club on Wednesday the 15th July at 6.30pm. Several community groups will be receiving grants to assist them with reaching their goals. This will be a great example of the benefits our community bank will bring to our community. I hope as many of you will be able to attend. See the attached invite for details. Once again we would like to thank you for your support and hope to see you on the night.

Regards

Doreen and Mernda Community Bank Steering committee

Urban Growth Boundaries

The Region has provided a government information sheet on the new Urban Growth Boundaries. The new areas can also be viewed at the following link:

http://services.land.vic.gov.au/maps/mpmo.jsp

More information is available at www.vic.gov.au/planningmelbourne

The closest areas to us look like Wollert, Donnybrook, Woodstock.

"Brigades are reminded that all formal submissions, feedback and presentations will need to provided through the Area Office. Brigades are not to provide direct response to the Department of Planning and Community Development. This prevents contradictory advice being given."

I just hope this doesn't spell the end to the Donnybrook Cheese Factory - that would be devastating...

Advice for safe handling and training in smoke fluid mists

While smoke fluids used in portable smoke generators are neither hazardous substances nor dangerous goods, the following pre-cautions need to be adhered to when handling and inhaling the smoke fluid mists:
  1. Use gloves and safety goggles when handling the smoke fluids - i.e. to pour fliuds into smoke machines.
  2. Use respiratory protection when working with the smoke fluids - a. Breathing apparatus (BA) during training provides adequate protections; b. A P2 particle respirator is sufficient to protect observers or trainers no wearing BA

While inhalation of the smoke fluid mists should not produce any adverse health effects in healthy individuals, individuals with pre-existing respiratory conditions may be prone to respiratory irritation when exposed.
